Grand Canyon Skywalk

Peach Springs, Hualapai Reservation, Arizona, USA

3 Tuned Mass Dampers

This horseshoe-shaped cantilever bridge, whose floor is made of a 2-1/2-inch-thick glass walkway, extends 70 feet over the Grand Canyon. Our team created three TMD units to mitigate the potential for uncomfortable motion on this unique structure, which is sensitive to both wind and pedestrian movement. Nested inside the structure’s U-shaped support beams, the TMD system was designed to avoid obstructing visitors’ views through the glass floor. Our team collaborated with Lochsa Engineering on this project, which CNN identified as one of mankind’s greatest engineering achievements.
